PATTERN
& SENSES marks the first solo exhibition
of the acclaimed Hong Kong sculptor at Grotto and the first
for Wong since 2000. Featuring a new series of works inspired
by Islamic and Indian patterns, Wong strives to explore
the cultural relationship between different "primitive"
society and their significance in our modern day environment.
The
exhibition features three types of works: tribal dresses,
shoes and wall hangings. Using a wide range of ceramic medium
such as porcelain, terracotta and black stone clay, Fiona
Wong meticulously modeled her pieces according to a life
size scale. Particular attention is paid to the works' intricate
patterns which the artist believes are strong implication
of the cultural specifics pertinent to the origin of the
design. Wong also carefully observed the important modern
interpretations of these patterns as she concludes that
various senses expressed are of contemporary notion and
can be applied to our own situation.
