Grotto Fine Art takes great pleasure in presenting Joey Leung – Beyond Presumption , a highly anticipated exhibition of one of Hong Kong 's best woman artists. Featuring all new works from 2007-2008, Leung combines her comical illustration and literati sentiment in groundbreaking compositions that link together cynicism and fantasy. Insects, flowers, and human figure are all part of her new collection and they present a personal response to the symbolic, iconic and figural self.

The exhibition is Joey Leung's first one-woman exhibition after her MFA degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong . Focusing on linear narrative, Leung delivers her message through fragment of scenes that resemble traditional comics. The story line, however, features her interpretation of today's society and humanity in raw satire or cynicism. Vanity, greed and self-indulgence are all common themes in this exhibition that collectively projects a personal response to the social environment and changes in Hong Kong . An important aspect of Leung's work lies in her personal inscriptions. They are poems of Cantonese origin while the painted scenes resemble monochromatic paintings of Yuan and Ming dynasty. This classical relationship between words and images thus successfully bridge the gap between classicism and modernism in otherwise social comical scenes. Joey Leung is an independent artist based in Hong Kong . She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Chinese University in 2000 and 2007 respectively. Leung works are widely collected and her poster works have been exhibited at The International competition Trnava Poster Triennial 2003 (Czec) and the IPT 2003 International Poster Triennial In Toyama, Japan. |
