Event: Many A Splendid Thing: Ink Paintings of Eddie Lui Fung-ngar

Date: April 10 - 27, 2002

Grotto Fine Art is proud to present Many A Splendid Thing, an exhibition of local artist Eddie Lui Fung-nar, as part of our seminal Hong Kong Artists Series. Eddie Lui Fung-ngar is a leading and the most active art figure in Hong Kong. As president of the Visual Arts Society (1978-82), Hong Kong Modern Art Society (1995-98) and Honorary Adviser of the Hong Kong Art Promotion Panel (1996-99), Lui's influence on Hong Kong's curatorial and art administration are profound. He currently holds numerous important posts including president of the Confederation of Hong Kong Visual Artists (1997-), member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (1999-) as well as the Hong Kong Committee Director of the Federation of Asian Artists (1996-).

Given his heavy involvement and contribution in art promotion, Eddie Lui Fung-ngar is by all means a master painter and sculptor. His signature style derived from the concept of birth and rebirth and features prominently the studies of plants and vegetable as nature unfolds. Using the floral and natural world as metaphors, Lui painted abstract colorful sceneries with underlying messages that concern nothing but the cycles of life, its beginning, maturity and end.

Born in Hong Kong in 1947, Eddie Lui Fung-ngar was educated in art and design at the University of Hong Kong before winning the Urban Council Fine Arts Award in 1981. In 1997, Lui was given the Visual Arts Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society. The works of Lui have exhibited internationally for the past twenty years and acquired by private, public and museum collections.
