HO SIU-KEE: BODY GESTURE
Gaining experience through our senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) and make use of such experience to discern various phenomena in the world is probably the basic requirement for human being to survive. The body is indeed the subject of constructing the perceptual world. However, as a living being capable of activity and possesses gesture, the body is also the object of perception. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a French philosopher, perceives the body as our expression in the world and the visible form of our intention. This manifests the communicative function of the body. In fact, 'gesticulating with the body' is always the most primitive and direct means of expression. Putting the body in a specific setting, using the senses as the contact point and taking the perceptual world as the field of imagination, is often the basic requirement for creation and interpretation of works of art.

JERRY KWAN: PSUEDO-FOLK-ART
Jerry Kwan's new works go beyond the shapes and colours of traditional Chinese puppetry. They exhibit an even deeper understanding of the power of fictional truths. In his first exhibition for more than a decade, the artist has selected several well-known Chinese puppetry and opera figures, including General Kwan, the Black Overlord, God of Wealth, Door Guard (Chung Kwei), as his central themes. Each work is a mixed-media composition featuring plywood, acrylic paints, wires and other ready-made materials all put together in a facemask format. Modern Pop Art influence is evident, as Kwan has chosen a palette of vivid primary and pastel colours as well as hard-edged geometric shapes. The construction is very intricate and reflects the artist's concern for structural depth and balance. Most pieces are presented as relief sculptures with overlapping shapes (in the form of pre-cut plywood pieces) and attachments put together in multiple layers. On top of each layer are finer details like copper wire, nail and jewellery that bring out the subtle ornamental effect.

KWOK YING; 2006 SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION
Kwok Ying's new works focus on patterns and how different combination of simple forms can generate broader visual connotation. A physical artist who likes to use heavy industrial materials and labor-intensive works, Kwok applies pencil or ink on various type of surfaces including textile, paper and silk. The artist creates repetitive patterns of organic or textile origins, at times imitating everyday fabrics of everyday household patterns. The finished pieces exert a unique sense of lightness and heaviness, masculinity and femininity reflective of the artist's character. The essence of Kwok's work thus lies in its ability to amuse the view at first glance, then, by bringing them closer to work, unveil a new world of imaginative visual excitement and fresh senses.

“Men, I wish I knew how to quit you”
An exhibition of ceramic figures by Rosanna Li Wei- han

Rosanna Li Wei-han's ceramic figurines are some of the best contemporary hand-built sculptures in Hong Kong . Plump and fleshy, Li's figurines draw on well-known sources in their form and construction. Immediately springing to mind are the exaggerated proportion of the Venus of Willendorf, the delineated facial features of the Haniwa figurines of Kofun Japan , and, of course, the voluptuousness of the famous Tang dynasty “fat lady”. These ancient references are part of the artist's effort to enhance her work's rawness and primitive connotations. With large feet, round torso and a thick neck, Li's “fatties” have the qualities of an ancient man: unfettered by worldly obligations and yet obscure because of their undefined facial features.

Borrowed Stones: Sculptures by Mok Yat-san
Mok Yat-san's new works take on the concept of Chinese landscape paintings and theory. The distant mountain one often considers when looking at a Chinese scroll becomes a solitary formation under Mok's vision. Cast in stainless steel or other “hard” medium, Mok brings out the substantiality of the formation despite their miniature size. While the ancient considers the mountain sacred, Mok makes it shimmering with glitz and metallic gloss, as if trying to reverse the orthodox view of nature. Looking at these sculptures from afar, they are no different than the real landscape behind, or, in this case, of one's mind.

On Gossamer's Edge: Paper Cutout Drawings by Bovey Lee
Bovey Lee is an artist with dual training in painting and digital art. Her new collection of paper cutout drawings explores the issues of identity and her own bicultural experiences as a Hong Kong Chinese living in America . Both positive and negative imageries in her drawings, formed by meticulous cutouts on a singular picture plane, express the artist's own feelings of displacement and tension. In Lee's most recent works, the artist has tried to deconstruct and reconstruct her body by transforming her own body parts into landscape, portrait and still life. It is the artist's intention to demonstrate the increasingly intertwined and inseparable combination of nature, humanity and technology, as well as her critical perspective on the moral issues surrounding the fabrication of multiple identities.

CHENG CHI-FAI: CITY NOSTALGIA SERIES
The City Nostalgia series is a collection of work executed between 2002 and 2007 under the strong influence of 19 th century European Classicism. Executed in heavy oil pigment by brush and palette knife, these works exert unparalleled textural quality that transcends throughout an almost abstract composition. Different from his early works, this series features smoother surfaces and a darkened surrounding to resemble aged photograph. Cheng's newest works, Interior 17, Land 18 and City18 (2007), feature an interior scene of the artist's studio cityscape and landscape. Combining a mono-tone treatment with darkened edges, they are the best example of the artist's mature style that combines a romantic notion of intimacy, a solemn psychological tension and a profound passage of time. Abstract and obscure at first glance, Cheng's City Nostalgia series demand a close reading that draws the audience towards the heart of his painting. Once entered, one finds Cheng's artistic realm filled with familiar surrounding of this city's street corner, rooftops or private space. Each fragment of these scenes brings us closer to understanding Cheng's art and at the same time back to a time once forgotten.

JOEY KA-YIN LEUNG: BEYOND PRESUMPTION
The exhibition is Joey Leung's first one-woman exhibition after her MFA degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong . Focusing on linear narrative, Leung delivers her message through fragment of scenes that resemble traditional comics. The story line, however, features her interpretation of today's society and humanity in raw satire or cynicism. Vanity, greed and self-indulgence are all common themes in this exhibition that collectively projects a personal response to the social environment and changes in Hong Kong . An important aspect of Leung's work lies in her personal inscriptions. They are poems of Cantonese origin while the painted scenes resemble monochromatic paintings of Yuan and Ming dynasty. This classical relationship between words and images thus successfully bridge the gap between classicism and modernism in otherwise social comical scenes.

FALLING WATER: RECENT WORKS BY KAN KIT-KEUNG
Dr. Kan Kit-Keung is a man of science and art. By profession, he is a physicist whose research concentrates on the building of a model to describe nature. As an artist, Kan 's description of nature focuses on its visual and external order. Using traditional painting techniques such as “tsun” (texture) strokes and motifs, Kan delineates our visual world, minimized his hills and mountains, and gives his landscape a new sense of order and rhythm reminiscent of a modern architecture. By inserting a sense of lyricism into the abstract geometry and logic, Kan 's art is redefining the fundamental building blocks of nature. The result is both enticing and visually stunning.

HALLEY CHENG: GHOSTLINESS
Featuring all new works from 2008, Halley Cheng combines his traditional Chinese literati sentiment in groundbreaking compositions that pushes the boundary of conventional media. While landscape remains the focus of his collection, Cheng's imitation of ancient masterpieces provides another dimension to traditional landscape with an ingenious contemporary approach. Halley Cheng is a young Hong Kong artist whose artistic career spans a decade despite his age. Instead of forging an exact copy, Cheng aimed to recreate the appearance of subject with new medium such as charcoal, biro, adhesive tiles and pencil. Even the boarder of the painting is redone to create a new visual boundary. It is through this interaction of mediums that a synergy of expression become contemporary and relevant to the artist's root and age.

WAI PONG-YU: CEASELESS LINES
Wai Pongyu is the latest proponent in this genre. Executed with a fine ball pen, Wai's meticulous line travels in an undulating pattern, constructing abstract composition from a rhythmical movement of the hand and pen. The artist calls this mechanical drawing of the unconsciousness. Each line follows the previous on in a parallel direction, tracing the last mark without crossing over, and moving forward without breaking. Simple and direct, Wai Pongyu's lines are alone revealing images. They form mountains and lakes, cliffs and rivers, and even figural representations. With the addition of text and the artist's strong personal revelation, the audience is at once taken by the work's rich narratives, masterfully hidden between the artist's relentless and ceaseless lines.

URBAN SPIRITUALITY:CONTEMPORARY HONG KONG ART
Urbanism and spirituality are two conflicting ideals. The former focuses on ergonomics and pragmatism while the latter concerns contemplation and revelation. In an urban environment, streets and buildings are all strategically planted to create the flow that is essential to a modern city that stresses efficiency. In the spiritual realm, by contrast, it is within one's inner mind, beyond physical senses and away from worldly matters that enlightenment and one's ultimate nature can be sought out. Such spiritual elements transcend time and the material world. Is it possible, then, for the two polarities to cross paths? Can there be a means or dimension where they can coexist?

JOEY LEUNG KA-YIN: CLOUDY FAIRY-TALES
In using the most popular children classics to interpret the contemporary experience and existence, Joey Leung has unveiled the narrative power and cloudy side of fairy tales. In her paintings, pictorial images andliterary rhymes function as symbols and metaphors. Her observations of the city and its people are expressed through classical plots androles. The results are a mixture of irony and absurdity. Yet, the apparent mockery also enriches the characters in that they have now taken on a contemporary role and their stories provided with interesting parallels. Through the artist's newly adopted plots and adornment, our favorite fairy tales appear ever more relevant.

They do not point to a specific individual or profession; instead, they are the collective manifestations of the general populace, the mass.

KOON WAI BONG - PICTURING MOUNTAINS AND STREAMS

Among contemporary ink painters in Hong Kong , Koon Wai-bong stands out as a classicist dwelled in academia with an undeniable literati sentiment. Koon's paintings are predominately monochromatic landscapes with vast expanse of unpainted space. Devoid of human figures, they pay tributes to nature and its overwhelming power. Koon's execution is abbreviated yet meticulous – a few applications of brush lines cleverly represent pine trees or light dabbling of texture strokes as rocks that put into perspective the compositional framework.

Wong Yee Ki - Escape

Among contemporary ink painters in Hong Kong , Wong Yee-ki stands out as a surrealist who depicts fantastic landscape and images that reflect our mundane experiences. Wong's paintings are predominately colorful compositions. The artist uses a wide range of hues mixed with a sporadic use of splash ink and meticulous contours to depict imaginary scenes. Motifs deriving from comic and daily lives pay tributes to nature; yet through metaphors and allegories the artist delivers profound messages concerning vanity, insecurity and spiritual refuge.

William Lim - 54

William Lim's exhibition 54 will be our third collaboration since 2005. In Aura (2005) and Crossings (2007), William featured prints and conceptual art forms respectively, demonstrating his knowledge of spatial arrangement and architectural repertoire. The present exhibition contains nine works charged with emotions and convictions. Choosing still life objects as the primary motifs, William strives to create simple composition that transcends sentimental experiences. Mundane objects such as paper bag, cup and bottles take on center stage. As William said, their disposability parallels our own existence.

Tsang Chui Mei - An Empty Stage

Tsang Chui-mei's new exhibition contains a body of work that spans five years and stylistically transcends Chinese literati tradition and Western Abstract Expressionism. An established mid-career artist, Tsang possesses unparallel skills and knowledge in both traditions. While most of her works are acrylics on canvas, her line of thought is deeply rooted in Chinese philosophies. The present exhibition exemplifies her unique visions with each work producing a “scene” that tells a story from her personal and emotional self.

Aureola - Ho Siu-kee

Aureola is a series of sculpture work I developed in recent years to explore the duality of the body - its limitation and liberation. Taking reference to the history of tortures and punishment, the metal wearable sculptures suggest a tangible awareness of the limitation of the body and, on the other hand, embody the liberation of it with light (halo) as an intangible, metaphorical symbol being used. By employing metal and light to connote the idea of the constrained and the freed, it is expected that a broadened perception of “the bodies we live” can be provoked.

Lam Yau-sum - Cityscape

Lam Yau-sum’s new miniature landscape provides an interesting interpretation of this ironic question. Using a computer circuit board as the sculpture’s main frame, Lam painstakingly removes the wirings from the board and “rewires” them into a tree. The composition becomes essentially a street scene. It resembles a typical urban landscape that features more (if not all) man-made objects than natural plantations. The figure within appears comfortably indulged in his own activities, unaware and unaffected by this uncanny surroundings. In fact, the entire scene of Lam Yau-sum’s “cityscape” is fabricated yet it looks utterly familiar.

Chui Pui-chee - In Calligraphy In Me

Painting and calligraphy are deeply rooted in Chinese art history.  While painting is the representation of the objective world, calligraphy is the ultimate expressive core.  Hong Kong artist Chui Pui-chee is a leading calligrapher equipped with a wide range of repertoire and expertise.  Chui’s painting derives from the structure of his calligraphy, yet their juxtaposition and interaction give new definition to both genres.
