Line has play in central role in the development of Chinese painting throughout the ages. From primitive usage in seal carving and calligraphy to the modern incarnations through hair and gun powder, Chinese artists are constantly redefining lines to suit their contemporary identity. Hong Kong artist Wai Pongyu is the latest proponent in this genre. His meticulous line drawings done by a ball pen transmits an abstract expression and power through a lyrical composition. Romantic and dynamic, Wai's lines are ripples that constant expand beyond the painting surface. They form mountains and lakes, text and note, and even figural depictions. Relentless and ceaseless, Wai's lines transverse through ages and contemporary boundaries.
